In the US GP this year, the race officials registered 35 track violations. Due to the high amount of violations, they acquitted Alex Albon even though he clearly violated the track limits at turn 6. This caused the Haas F1 team to miss crucial six points in the constructor’s championship.
Haas team manager Peter Crolla has raised concerns over the results of the US GP, where the FIA stewards overlooked multiple major track limit penalties. The US racing team gathered all the required evidence and onboard cameras of the drivers and studied the violations very closely. Subsequently, the team has registered a legal document to the FIA over the same issue.
Haas’ lawyers submitted a 28-page dossier to FIA following the US GP results. The dossier contains image proof of Alex Albon clearly violating the track limits at turn 6. According to this document, Albon is supposed to receive another 15 five-second penalty in his lap times.
Nico Hulkenberg was already marked for three registered track limit violations. Yet, Hulkenberg would receive three more five-second penalties for the same issue of track limits violation. Even the Red Bull racer Sergio Perez must receive 18 five-second penalties for the same violation.
Moreover, Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll had violated the track limits and would acquire 16 more five-second penalties. The track limits violation and its subsequent penalties would create a big change in the results of the Sunday race, and Haas is trying its best to cause changes in the results.
How would the penalties change the results of the race?
A successful appeal from Haas could bring many changes to the results of the race. The entire classification of the race would have to be rewritten. Nico Hulkenberg would score points and finally finish P7 instead of the current P11 in the US GP. Racers such as George Russell, Pierre Gasly, Yuki Tsunoda, and Valtteri Bottas could also benefit from this appeal.
Gasly and Tsunoda would gain an additional place in the grid, and Perez and Stroll would be passed in positions. Logan Sargeant would also move up one spot to the ninth position in the results.
Regardless of the American results, Haas continues to fight for the ninth and eighth spots against Alfa Romeo and AlphaTauri. The change in results will surely favor the American team and help them finish at a better spot in the constructor championship at the season’s end.
