“Have faith in each other under pressure,” Mika Hakkinen praises Red Bull and Sergio Perez for their masterclass in Monaco
Sergio Perez after winning the Monaco GP
Sergio Perez won his first ever Monaco GP but it wasn’t as easy as it sounds. The Mexican had to fight through adversity to go with Red Bull’s strategic masterclass helping him win one of the most historic GPs on the calendar. We know how difficult it is to overtake on the narrow circuit of Monaco and after Charles Leclerc secured pole for Scuderia Ferrari, it looked like a distant team for Sergio Perez.
We all know that Sergio Perez wasn’t happy after he was put on a different strategy than Max Verstappen which made it next to impossible for him to win the race. To add salt to the wound, he was ordered to let Max through. This didn’t go well him the fans and obviously, Checo. But, it was important for Perez to put it behind him and work in tandem with team to win the Monaco GP.
Red Bull didn’t disappoint the Mexican this time around with the strategy. Sergio Perez was running third before the team decided to switch him to inters allowing him to undercut Charles Leclerc and overcut Carlos Sainz eventually, who had decided to skip the switch to inters and went straight for the hard tyres. This was made possible because of the pace advantage he had between 16-18 laps because of Red Bull’s bold strategy.
Mika Hakkinen impressed with Red Bull and Sergio Perez’s performance at the Monaco GP
Mika Hakkinen was impressed to see how Red Bull and Sergio Perez worked together to get the better off Ferrari. He said, “Red Bull got the strategy right, jumping their cars from third and fourth up to first and third.”
“What makes one team have the confidence to make the right call, and another team to hesitate and get it wrong?“
That’s down to people and the confidence which they have in each other when under pressure,” as reported by gpblog.
Sergio Perez has had a lot of bad luck in the last few races and it was a case of sooner rather than later for him to win a Grand Prix. But, he could not have done without the help of his team. We would want to see more of it in the future as he closes in gap to his team mate, Max Verstappen.
