“He has gained awareness,” Jean Alesi focuses on positives for Charles Leclerc despite a frustrating and unfortunate British GP

Charles Leclerc has come out as a beast for Ferrari this season around. Although the Monegasque driver finds himself 43 points behind championship leader, Max Verstappen, going into the Austrian GP, it’ll be unfair to put the blame on him. If anyone has to be blamed, it has to be Ferrari for their poor decision making, slow pit stops and inability to provide him with a reliable car.

After Max Verstappen suffered from loss of performance during the British GP, it was between the two Ferraris of Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc to figure it out. Charles was definitely the faster of the two but just couldn’t get past his team mate. Eventually, when the threat of Lewis Hamilton increased, it was decided that Carlos Sainz should let him through.

It was Leclerc’s race to win after that but after an unfortunate safety during which Ferrari decided to not call him into the pits for a new set of tyres. This is what ultimately costed him the victory and also the other two podium places. He was left vulnerable on his older set while everyone at the front had come in to change to a new set of soft compound tyres.

Charles Leclerc and Ferrari have a lot of positives to take from the British GP, according to Jean Alesi

Despite whatever happened during the British GP, Jean Alesi still wants to focus on the positives. He said, “After Silverstone, I recommend keeping the emotions we have received. The ones that Leclerc gave to all of us. I have rarely seen riders capable of doing what Charles did.

Overtaking outside the Copse is worth a season – writes Alesi –I don’t start making comparisons with some big names in motorsport. I think Leclerc is Leclerc: an absolute monster.”

“Which is paired with another red monster, the car. The consequent controversies are inevitable around Ferrari. I prefer to think that Leclerc has gained in terms of popularity and awareness, while not winning the points he deserved .”

It’s difficult to entirely agree with Jean Alesi on this point as very few F1 drivers get to be in a championship battle, which they are well equipped to win. Hence, Charles Leclerc and Ferrari have to be disappointed with the result.
