“He is a true champion of diversity,” Mercedes stands up for Lewis Hamilton after Nelson Piquet’s ‘disgusting’ and ‘racist’ remark
Mercedes driver, Lewis Hamilton
Lewis Hamilton joined Mercedes in 2013 from McLaren and has changed the complexion of the sport ever since. A relatively new team with an injection of money needed a driver who could help them compete against the likes of Red Bull. Niki Lauda helped this promising youngster join Mercedes with numerous teams trying to get his signature and that was the best decision that they ever made.
This promising prospect went on to become a six time world champion and the most successful driver in the history of the team. But his championships are only a part of the personality that he has been able to develop during the course of his career. We have seen it time and again as to how important it is for Lewis Hamilton to use the influence he has over the people across the world and bring about a meaningful change.
During one of his interviews, he talked about how difficult it was for him as a black kid to get into F1. Therefore, he want to make F1 as diverse as possible so that any talented irrespective of nationality, color, faith etc. doesn’t have to go through the same level of treatment. Lewis Hamilton has now been in the sport for 15 odd years now but racism still continues to hold its roots in the sport as another incident emerges which shows Nelson Piquet using racing abusive language against Mercedes’ driver.
Lewis Hamilton gets full support of Mercedes after being subjected to racist remarks
Mercedes quickly sprung to Lewis Hamilton’s defense as soon as the incident took place. The German Manufacturer in their official statement said, “We condemn in the strongest terms any use of racist or discriminatory language of any kind.“
“Lewis has spearheaded our sport’s efforts to combat racism, and he is a true champion of diversity on and off track.“
“Together, we share a vision for a diverse and inclusive motorsport, and this incident underlines the fundamental importance of continuing to strive for a brighter future.”
There is no room for racism in this sport or in any strata of society. Therefore, it becomes the responsibility of FIA to take adequate steps and lay down a firm precedent for anyone who even thinks of saying anything offensive in the future.
