Max Verstappen has always been seen as this fierce competitors who will fight tooth and nail for even absolutely anything on the track. This has brought along a lot of criticism with drivers like Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel complaining a tad bit too aggressive on the track. We saw him involved in a lot of accidents last year costing him a lot of points and making it extra hard to win the first ever championship.

But, if you want to continue being at the top of the sport, one needs to pick their battles or it might come back to haunt you. Max Verstappen seems to have understood the assignment now. After bagging his maiden title, there’s a sense of calmness around him to go with his aggressive approaching. The Dutchman looks like the perfect combination of nature and nurture, which goes down to how he has brought up his mum and dad.

We saw an example of this calm and collected approach in Monaco where he definitely didn’t have the pace to win the race. Unlike last years, he didn’t throw it away by making a lunge. On the contrary, he bided his time to look for an opportunity which would help him get the best out of the resources available. That did earn him a spot on the podium ahead of Charles Leclerc when his chances looked quite bleak.

Allan McNish has been impressed to see the finished product which is Max Verstappen right now. He praised him saying, “The one thing I saw with Max was someone that wasn’t necessarily attacking for the last tenth or the last overtake that we have seen before.”

“Someone that realised ‘maybe I’m not quite quick enough this weekend to deliver a win’ and is thinking [about the] long game.”

“It might be the person that’s just won a World Championship and knows he’s already got one in his pocket, so doesn’t necessarily have that little thing to prove,” as reported by planetf1.

Max Verstappen has looked like a different driver after making tweaks to his driving style. We have seen him pick his battles rather than going for it every time. This has helped him maximize his opportunities and will also help him in the long run.
