Helmut Marko agrees with Fernando Alonso’s theory that Ferrari’s podium win at Monza was a one-hit wonder

With the Italian GP weekend having recently ended, Ferrari are now riding on a high after their almost-double podium. Walking into their home Grand Prix, the Scuderia’s condition did not seem too promising. At the Dutch GP, right before the race in Monza, Charles Leclerc suffered an upsetting DNF. And at the Belgian GP, it was Leclerc’s teammate Carlos Sainz who suffered the same fate. Thus, even the Tifosis were scared of hoping for a double podium for their two superstars in red.

But once the weekend in Monza ushered in, the Maranello outfit surprised everyone with some great performances right from the Free Practice sessions up to the Main Race. During FP3, Carlos Sainz led the pack ahead of Max Verstappen by a fraction of a second. During the Qualifiers, Red Bull’s Dutch Lion, Max Verstappen, yielded to Sainz as the Spaniard got Ferrari their first pole position of the year at their own home race.

Eventually, during Sunday’s race, Max Verstappen did catch up to and surpass Carlos Sainz. Still, the 29-year-old ended up with a third-place finish, and the podium win brought back some lost hopes in the Ferrari garage. But according to Red Bull Chief Advisor Helmut Marko, Ferrari’s top form will not last long as he said on ServusTV, “We knew that Ferrari would put everything possible into Monza. They went to the maximum and squeezed out the last horsepower.

With Ferrari ending their run in Monza with a podium win for Carlos Sainz and a P4 finish for Charles Leclerc, one would expect them to carry this form to the next race in Singapore. But F1 veteran Fernando Alonso has closely observed how the Scuderia bled themselves dry trying to impress the Tifosi by performing to the best of their capabilities. He predicted ahead of the Italian GP that Ferrari would go all-in for the race in Monza in an attempt not to disappoint their fans.

While Marko and Alonso both agree upon the fact that Ferrari’s form at the Italian GP was a one-hit wonder, it is all mere speculation at this point. Only a couple of weeks ago, Carlos Sainz had said that he believes Ferrari can win a Grand Prix this year, in contrary to what Helmut Marko and Fernando Alonso believe. Now, it remains to be seen whose prediction turns out to be true in the end as several races are still left in the roster.
