Here is all you need to know about Daniel Ricciardo’s options post his McLaren exit

Daniel Ricciardo

After countless speculations by the fans and the F1 pundits alike, recent reports from various sources have confirmed that Daniel Ricciardo has already been tipped off by McLaren regarding their intentions to terminate their deal with him prematurely, as the papaya team allegedly wants to go for F2 Champion Oscar Piastri for the next season. According to the news, contract talks with Piastri are at the end-stage and McLaren has agreed to pay Daniel Ricciardo a penalty fee as they are going to sever ties with him before the duration of the contract is officially up.

Now, Daniel Ricciardo is left with limited options once his exit from McLaren is finalised and made official. With Fernando Alonso’s recruitment at Aston Martin, Sebastian Vettel’s seat at the British team is already taken for the next year. Ricciardo needs to act fast if he wishes to get a Formula 1 seat for the next season. The 33-year-old Australian needs to sign a deal with one of the teams which are yet to confirm their driver line-up for 2023, or else, he will have to leave F1 altogether.

Keeping in mind Daniel’s experience and his driving skills, there are some ways in which the eight-time Grand Prix Champion racer might want to go about, in order to continue his F1 career. The Honey Badger might also take a surprise hiatus from F1 and pursue other options like IndyCar, and other such leagues.

Ever since Ricciardo failed to impress the crowd with his racing in the initial races of F1 2022, the racer’s future has been a hot and debatable topic in F1 town amongst all the fans and followers. While Daniel Ricciardo has repeatedly assured everyone that he is still going to drive for McLaren next year as they have a firm contract in place, it seems that the Woking-based team has found a way to cut their deal period short by paying Daniel a hefty penalty fee.

Now, McLaren is almost certainly going to sign with Oscar Piastri for their Championship campaign in 2023, and that leaves Daniel Ricciardo with only a few options. The Perth native might choose to move to Alpine, where Alonso has left a seat empty and Piastri has denied signing any conclusive deal with the French team. Ricciardo had previously driven for Renault in 2019 and 2020, but then the team got rebranded to Alpine and he left to join McLaren.

The Honey Badger’s second option is to go for Nicholas Latifi’s seat at Williams, which is still up for grabs. Other options include a move to Haas should the American team choose not to continue with Mick Schumacher, who has considerably underperformed in this season, compared to his teammate Kevin Magnussen. And if all these routes do not work out for Ricciardo, then he can always move to IndyCar, Formula-E, etc.
