Formula 1 races all around the globe, yet most of its teams have always been based in Europe, especially the United Kingdom. The sport recently opened the gates for new team entries. This has been met with some serious contenders such as Andretti-Cadillac. However, billionaire Calvin Lo is eager to bring an F1 team to China.
Calvin Lo is the CEO of R.E. Lee International, the world’s largest insurance broker. The 45-year-old has been an avid fan of Formula 1 for decades. Now, Calvin wants to involve himself in the Formula 1 circus. Lo is considering multiple proposals and is looking to invest in establishing an F1 team. The billionaire is aware of the expense in F1 and would only look for sustainable projects that can be met with his finances.
More importantly, the 45-year-old is adamant that Asia needs more representation in F1. Currently, the sport only has a handful of Asian drivers, Zhou Guanyu, Yuki Tsunoda, and Alex Albon. Calvin is convinced that the continent would greatly benefit the sport if it could have a team on the grid.
Subsequently, Lo dreams of having an F1 team based in one of the wealthiest regions in Asia, the Pearl River Delta. He said, “I would love to have an Asian team with a base in the Pearl River Delta.” The 45-year-old admitted that it would not be an easy task as the team will be founded far away from the heart of motorsport in the UK.

Calvin Lo says an Asian F1 team could change someone’s life
Lo highlighted the benefits the project could have on the region. An Asian team could help develop some talented personnel not just for F1 but in other avenues as well. The 45-year-old reckoned this could be a game changer. He stated, “For young people to be exposed to this kind of world, it could change someone’s life.”
Calvin Lo believes the upcoming F1 regulations for 2026 will provide the perfect opportunity for new teams. The sport’s ambition to become carbon neutral further adds to the incentives. As of now, Audi is confirmed for 2026 as it takes over the Sauber F1 team.
Previously, team principals such as Toto Wolff and Christian Horner had stated that a new F1 entrant must bring value to the sport and be financially stable. Calvin Lo agrees with the statements as the 45-year-old plans to only support a promising endeavor into the pinnacle of motorsport. However, Lo made it clear that he would remain behind the scenes if he funds an F1 team. He said, “If I go into F1, you won’t see me. It’s not my style.”
Thus, Calvin Lo understands the need for an Asian team at the pinnacle of motorsport. Yet, the 45-year-old is well aware of the ramifications of a poorly managed project, especially in the finances. However, Lo will only enter F1 if he is convinced by a proposal that takes the fight against the existing teams on the grid.
