Former Formula One driver Jan Lammers stated the day after the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in the Baku City Circuit that he was taken aback by Toto Wolff’s comments. It is quite normal for team principals to engage in post-race conversations with drivers on the grid.

The Mercedes team principal apologised profusely to 7-time Formula One World Champion Lewis Hamilton for delivering a “sh*t box” to the manufacturing unit. Robert Doornbos, like Lammers, is taken aback by these assertions.

The former Formula One driver acknowledges why Mercedes is dissatisfied with its own task, however according to Doornbos, Hamilton is also not obtaining the most out of the W13. Briton teammate George Russell, who is new to the Brackley-based team, makes the most out of every weekend.

“I also don’t like the fact that Toto keeps apologising to Hamilton after every race that the car is so bad. His teammate finished 20 seconds ahead of him and was on the podium. He is not complaining either. It’s a particularly bad year for Lewis on all sides, but I don’t think the team is helping him by defending him like this,” said Doornbos.

Unlike Russell who has been currently deemed as ‘Mister Consistency’, who was on the podium for three times in 2022, Hamilton only managed one third place after eight races. The Mercedes driver is obviously suffering from porpoising and therefore does not feel at ease in the W13. Hamilton’s annoyance, according to Doornbos, will only grow now that Russell is scoring reasonably many World Championship points each weekend.

The 20 drivers from the 10 teams on the grid will reassemble from 17 June-19 June 2022 for the Canadian Grand Prix in the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve to battle it out in Williams’ Nicholas Latifi’s and Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll’s home Grand Prix.
