“I am in absolutely no rush” : Guenther Steiner wants to delay upgrades for VF-22

The all-new season of Formula 1 2022 has seen some teams fall behind the others due to their sheer underperformance and has also seen some team excel beyond their fans’ expectations. One such example is the American team Haas F1, headed by Team Principal Guenther Steiner. Haas has not performed very well in the previous seasons–in fact, the team, which debuted in Formula 1 in 2016, could not score a single point in 2021.

But the current season has witnessed a rebirth of Haas as they have already scored more points in the first four races of this year than they had achieved in the previous two seasons taken together. And a huge chunk of appreciation for Haas’ improved performance in 2022 should go to their amazing car–the VF-22–that seems fast and reliable, and abides by all the rules changes that the FIA have issued this year.

In Imola, many of the Constructors introduced their first batch of upgrades for their cars after observing their Qualifying performance and race pace in the first three races of the season. While Red Bull’s RB-18 had been plagued with reliability issues, they made some changes to the car to take care of that. And similarly, teams like Mercedes did some tweaking with the aero mechanism of their cars as well. But Haas, surprisingly, kept the configuration of their car the same.

Speaking to motorsportweek.com, Haas Team Principal Guenther Steiner explained why he feels there is no need to hurry and make changes to their current race car when they are already getting the maximum performance from their VF-22. He said, “Before evaluating the steps we want to take, I want to evaluate where we are. I am in absolutely no rush to make the car magical, or the like.”

57-year-old Guenther Steiner is very impressed with where his team stands as of now. Recruiting Kevin Magnussen for a second time after Nikita Mazepin’s exit in the midst of the Ukraine-Russia tension has done wonders for Haas as Magnussen has scored the team’s highest finish ever–a P5 position–in the race in this year’s first race in Bahrain.

Speaking of the need for upgrades in the Haas car, Guenther Steiner also said, “I just want to make sure that when we make the necessary developments, we can see a real difference . Otherwise, we make fun of ourselves. We are working to put together the packages with the related simulations. Once the numbers return, we will go into production: simple.
