“I don’t think Max Verstappen would have been eligible,” Zak Brown faces backlash after making shocking Colton Herta comparison
Colton Herta and Zak Brown
The F1 super license has been a big topic of discussion in recent weeks as Indycar driver Colton Herta’s request to get an exemption on the license was denied which ultimately cost him a shot at competing in Formula 1. Red Bull was keen on hiring him to replace Pierre Gasly at AlphaTauri which put him well in line to secure his spot in the sport. Unfortunately the FIA’s decision meant that it was not possible for the driver to race in F1.
To qualify for a F1 super licence, one must be 18 years old along with having also have competed in any single-seater championship for at least two seasons, and have at least 300km of driving experience in an F1 car under their belt. Super License points are awarded by almost all race series where you are guaranteed a super license if you win the Formula 2 or Indycar championship.
Colton Herta was just a few points shy of getting one but failed to do so. After his appeal was denied, Indycar drivers and racing personalities around the world marched in his support.
Zak Brown on the other hand made a statement on the situation which shocked many. His words seemed to undermine the efforts taken by F1 legend Kimi Raikkonen and reigning world champion Max Verstappen where the McLaren CEO made his stance on the super licence agreement but ended up making a controversial statement for which he faced some backlash from the fans’. Here is what he said about the situation.

Zak Brown believes neither Max or Kimi would have been eligible for a super license
“I don’t think Max Verstappen would have been eligible for a superlicense. I don’t think Kimi Raikkonen would have been eligible for a superlicense,” he said.
This ongoing situation between Colton Herta and the FIA has brought out a lot of questions regarding the current super license points system which seems to be outdated and requires an update that will satisfy all the parties.
The main reason for this system was to make sure that the driver is mature and talented enough to get into the sport. Although after missing out on getting a driver like Herta into the sport, it seems like something is massively wrong with the rules regarding the same.
