“I expect it to be one of the most enjoyable days of my career”: Logan Sargeant very much looking forward to FP1 outing with Williams at the US GP

Nicholas Latifi’s departure at Williams has left a vacant seat there, and no potential replacements are as of yet confirmed. Nyck de Vries had been linked with the seat for a long time, but he will be driving for AlphaTauri next year. There’s Mick Schumacher, and Williams’ team principal Jost Capito had told Sky Germany that Schumacher is under consideration for a seat. But it’s all a bit touch-and-go.
Daniel Ricciardo is very unlikely to drive for Williams, even if he will be available. Then there’s Logan Sargeant, who is currently P3 in his rookie season in Formula 2. Jost Capito believes that Sargeant is ready for F1: “I think he’s ready. Yeah, he needs some [superlicence] points. Of course, if he doesn’t get the points, nothing helps. But yeah, I’m confident that he’s ready if he gets the points or not.”
And therein lies the catch: Logan Sargeant has to finish P5 or above in F2, which will give him the required super license points for a Formula 1 seat. He currently sits on 135 points, and the gap down from him to sixth place is only 9 points, with one weekend to go. The American will be present in Austin to drive in FP1, something he is very much looking forward to.
Logan Sargeant: “I don’t really put too much emphasis on where I’m from”
In conversation with Rolling Stone magazine, Logan Sargeant discussed a variety of things, including his time at Williams, Formula 1’s recent boom in the United States and his upcoming test at Williams. As for his F2 season, he has done fairly well and is currently ahead of his teammate Liam Lawson by 12 points.
But Sargeant just put 2022 down as a ‘year to learn’: “Starting the season, I didn’t really put any expectation on it. It was simply a year to learn as much as I could and perform as best as I possibly could. We’ve had a really strong pace throughout the season, which is always important. And obviously, we’ve gotten a couple feature race wins under our belt. In general, it’s been everything I could have hoped for.”
There is quite a bit of buzz around Sargeant as the next American F1 driver, but he is just trying to do his job: “To be honest, I just see myself as another driver. I don’t really put too much emphasis on where I’m from. If I do my job and I put in the hard work, as I’ve done for the past 12 years, then I believe eventually I’ll make it.
Sargeant will be one of the multiple rookies driving in FP1 in Austin, something he expects to enjoy: “The feeling is almost indescribable. An F1 car is so much better than anything I’ve ever driven in terms of power, grip, aero, and brakes. It’s just a difficult feeling to describe. But the adrenaline rush is next level. I enjoy that adrenaline pump, for sure. I expect it to be one of the most enjoyable days of my career.”
Apart from Logan Sargeant, the other rookies present in Austin will be – Alex Palou with McLaren, Robert Shwartzman with Ferrari, and the man above him in F2 – Théo Pourchaire, who will be driving for Alfa Romeo in FP1.
