‘I have an expiry date,’ Fernando Alonso realistic about his future in Formula 1

Fernando Alonso still seems to be enjoying his time in Formula 1 after competing in the championship for almost 2 decades. The Spaniard currently races for Alpine F1 team and is partnered with French driver Esteban Ocon. Despite being 41 years of age, it’s crazy to see how he still has the pace to keep up with the youngsters.

Over the summer break, it was announced that Fernando Alonso will be switching teams. The Spaniard will be joining Aston Martin from 2023 onwards as he signed a multi year contract with the British squad led by billionaire Lawrence Stroll. His son Lance will be the second driver for the team. Fernando will be working with the team for 2023 and 2024 and is confident that it will be a successful partnership.

It was due to 4 time world champion Sebastian Vettel’s departure that Fernando Alonso got the opportunity to sign with the team. Alonso’s extensive experience racing and winning in different series in the past means that he is no longer afraid to take up a challenge. While speaking to the Spanish media, Alonso revealed that he also feels good.

“Sport is my life and I know I have an expiry date, but I try to enjoy it,” Fernando Alonso said. “When I left Formula 1 in 2018, I was mentally and physically exhausted. Since I came back, I don’t feel like that: I’m fresher,” he said.

With his age, it is crazy to see Fernando Alonso still perform at 100% every race. His podium in the 2021 Qatar Grand Prix and his qualifying lap at the 2022 Canadian Grand Prix doesn’t fail to astonish me. It will truly be a sad day for the sport when the 2 time world champion announces his retirement.
