“I have been targeted my whole life,” Lewis Hamilton breaks silence after being subject to racial slur by Nelson Piquet, demands immediate action

Lewis Hamilton and Nelson Piquet

Lewis Hamilton has finally responded to Nelson Piquet’s racist remark in his own savage manner. The three time world champion, Piquet, has faced the brunt of fans after he called Hamilton a ‘black guy’ in a podcast. This sparked a controversy which required F1 to intervene and condemn the actions of the former racing driver.

FIA has been putting in its sincere efforts to make F1 a more diverse and inclusive sport and this drive outside of the track is spearheaded by Lewis Hamilton himself, who has time and again highlighted his racially abusive incidents in the past and said, “I’ve been surrounded by these attitudes and targeted my whole life.”

He also confirmed that he needed to have a thick skin in order to overcome all the obstacles. But, that is in the past and now he doesn’t shy away from talking on social evils and racism is definitely one of them.

The sport is growing more and more popular by the day which adds an extra layer of responsibility on all people connected with them to act in a dignified and appropriate manner. Therefore, the FIA should not just stop at releasing an official statement condemning the slur but it should also punish the individual to establish a precedent for the future.

After FIA’s statement, Lewis Hamilton has also broken silence on the issue and has said a lot without even saying a word. The seven time world champion retweeted a fan’s tweet which read, “What if Lewis Hamilton just tweeted ‘Who the fuck is Nelson Piquet?’ then closed twitter.” I think that should be enough.

He also requested people to change the mindset as this is a universal issue and not just limited to F1.

Mercedes has also come out to support Lewis Hamilton. The team in a statement, said, “We condemn in the strongest terms any use of racist or discriminatory language of any kind.”

Lewis has spearheaded our sport’s efforts to combat racism, and he is a true champion of diversity on and off track.

“Together, we share a vision for a diverse and inclusive motorsport, and this incident underlines the fundamental importance of continuing to strive for a brighter future.”

Millions of people watch and follow the sport. That includes young children too and therefore, if this incident goes unpunished, it’ll set a wrong example for the future generations.
