‘I have to thank Toto for new floor rules’: Christian Horner jokingly thanks Mercedes’ team Principal for Red Bull’s win at Spa
Yesterday, Red-Bull successfully secured a 1-2 at Spa with the lead driver Max Verstappen finishing 18 seconds ahead of the rest of the grid. With the new floor rules coming in for the Belgian Grand Prix many expected teams like Ferrari and Red-Bull to be negatively impacted by them.
Mercedes’ team principle Toto Wolff had appealed before the FIA during the first half of the season as their drivers had been facing porpoising issues while teams like Red-Bull and Ferrari did not. After Red-Bull’s domination at Spa despite the new floor rules, Christian Horner the team’s principle jokingly thanked Toto Wolff for the new rules as they remained unaffected by them.
Max Verstappen had a dominant weekend in Spa this week securing him the win and the fastest lap of the race. He currently has a 93 point lead over his teammate Sergio Perez and a 98 point lead from his championship rival Charles Leclerc, securing his place as this years world champion before the race at Singapore this month.
Christian Horner commented on a successful weekend saying, “We have a very efficient car, we’ve found a very good setup and Max has just been in phenomenal form the very first lap in first practice.”
Despite securing the fastest time on qualifying day, Max and several other drivers including his championship rival Charles Leclerc had taken grid penalties after exceeding the permitted number of engine parts allowed for the season, causing him to start 14th on day of the race. The perfectly executed strategy by Red-Bull and the excellent driving by the defending world champion secured him the 9th win of the season and the 29th win of his career.

“Thereafter the pace we had with Max and Checo was enough that he got past Carlos and brought home one of the most dominant performances that we’ve had as a team since either 2010 or 2013,” says Christian Horner.
Max Verstappen was satisfied with his performance this week but ‘wants more’ he stated, “I think also everyone in the team, we are having a good time, but we are also very focused on what we want to achieve. At the moment we are achieving that, but we always want more.”
Horner was extremely pleased with the performance that the team had portrayed this weekend at the Belgian Grand Prix and compares it to past dominant performances like Singapore 2013. However, he believes that the championship is yet to be won and that anything can change at a moment’s notice.
