“I look like an idiot saying that” Toto Wolff hopeful of a Mercedes win despite their woes this season
Mercedes' team principal Toto Wolff
Times changed drastically after the summer break for Mercedes and team principal Toto Wolf has been baffled himself from the team’s performance at Spa. During the Hungarian Grand Prix which was the last race before the summer break, George Russell managed to put his car on pole position and in doing so, he achieved his first pole in his career. It was a mega feat for Mercedes following their struggle all season. Meanwhile his teammate Lewis Hamilton qualified in 7th place. It was a surprise pole for the team which didn’t result in a victory. Although this gave the impression that Mercedes was ready to fight with the top dogs of 2022 aka Ferrari and Red Bull.
It was a strong Hungarian GP for the Brackley squad as Lewis Hamilton and George Russell brought in a double podium for the team finishing in 2nd and 3rd place respectively giving Toto Wolff and the folks at Mercedes, a day to remember. This gave a motivational boost to the team for the remainder of the season where Lewis stated that they wanted to wreck havoc this season. This somehow wasn’t shifted into reality as both the drivers had very poor pace all throughout the Belgian Grand Prix weekend. Qualifying was a horror show for the team as both the drivers were about 2 seconds off the pace from Max Verstappen who was fastest in qualifying.
Although a bunch of drivers including the 2021 world champion were to get grid penalties for the race which pushed them to the back of the grid giving Mercedes a chance to fight for the win. Even though their race pace was comparatively better on Sunday, they were nowhere near the top runners. With the title contenders pushed to the back of the grid, this was the team’s best chance at gunning for victory. Nevertheless Toto Wolff isn’t prepared to let go of any hopes for achieving a win in the remainder of the season. He further went on to give his thoughts on the situation.

“We still have the ambition to win,” Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff states after a poor performance in Spa

“We still have the ambition to win races this year,” he said. Toto Wolff further went on to admit that this statement was a bit hilarious looking at their performance in the Belgian Grand Prix. “When I say that today, I look like an idiot,” he admitted.
In the end, Toto Wolff believes that there are tracks in the remaining races on the calendar that will suit the team just like in Hungary. Lewis has a record of winning a race in every season that he has competed it. That might change this season as the team just doesn’t have the pace. Although miracles do happen and who else other than 7 time world champion Lewis Hamilton would know right?
