“I think it is right to take this step”: Mattia Binotto bows out of Ferrari amidst rumors of his sacking from the Team Principal post

Mattia Binotto had talked about Ferrari having a chance to win the last 10 races of the F1 season.

The official news is in as Ferrari have confirmed that Mattia Binotto has stepped down from his role as the Team Principal of the Maranello outfit effective immediately. Undoubtedly, the general mood in the Italian team’s garage is quite remorseful since one of their oldest-serving members is leaving them. Binotto had taken up the role as the Scuderia’s chief in 2019, ascending the throne as Maurizio Arrivabene was removed from the post.

During Mattia Binotto’s stint as the CTO of Ferrari, the team had seen considerable success, and it was hoped by all the Tifosis that Binotto would bring the Maranello outfit back to its winning ways. But from 2020, the team witnessed a sharp decline in their performance–in both race pace as well as strategy. What followed was a string of disappointing results and huge shock for the Italians when McLaren, Racing Point, and even Renault surpassed Ferrari in the scoreboard with the Scuderia ranking at 6th in the 2020 Constructors’ Championship.

In 2021, McLaren talent Carlos Sainz shifted to Ferrari, bringing with him new hopes for the team to finally excel in the rankings. But it was still quite disappointing for the Tifosis as the results were not at all encouraging for the Maranello outfit. And things did look up during the initial few races of this year, but ultimately, Ferrari failed to keep up with Red Bull and had to settle for the second place in the World Championship. This prompted several protests that Mattia Binotto would be ousted from the team, and it has now been confirmed that the 53-year-old is stepping down from his duties at Ferrari.

Ferrari has always been one of the most prominent teams in Formula 1, with a history of the highest number of wins at the Constructors’ Championship. But it has been a long and tiring dry period for the team from Maranello since their last Constructors’ Championship came in 2008. And quite naturally, Ferraris’ inability to scale up to their name as the most successful F1 team was attributed to the Team Principals.

Owing to the faults in the strategies and the overall lack of pace of Ferrari, Mattia Binotto was criticised ruthlessly as the Team Principal. 2022 was thought to be the year when the Scuderia turns the tables and become the World Champion, but even that did not work out as Red Bull topped the points table. And thus, Mattia Binotto decided to resign from his role, saying, “With the regret that this entails, I have decided to conclude my collaboration with Ferrari. I think it is right to take this step at this time as hard as this decision has been for me.

With Binotto’s resignation from Ferrari, it is yet to be seen who takes up the Herculean task of becoming Ferrari’s new Team Principal and leading them towards their much-awaited victory. As of now, Alfa Romeo head Frederick Vasseur is being thought to be the frontrunner for claiming Binotto’s spot. It is only a matter of time before Ferrari announce who their new Team Principal will be.
