“I want to make a name for myself in F1”: Mick Schumacher discusses keeping up with father Michael Schumacher’s legacy in Formula 1

Mick Schumacher
Being in the same sport as your seven-time World Champion father can be a grueling experience for anyone, and twenty-three year-old Mick Schumacher has to face that every day as the Haas F1 driver is the son of all-time F1 legend Michael Schumacher. But the German F2 Champion believes he is chasing his own aspirations by entering into this world of racing, and his father’s legacy has little to do with his dreams. He also said that he does not feel any pressure because of who his father is as he wants to make his own mark in this sport.
Although Mick Schumacher entered F1 in 2021 and could not score a single point in his debut year, the 23-year-old is currently enjoying a purple patch after coming within the top 10 for the last two consecutive Grands Prix in Silverstone and in Austria. With his performance back on the rails after a tough spell for some months, Mick is confident in himself, and he talked about his father’s influence on him. Although many people speculate that Mick would crumble under the weight of his father’s legacy, the young racer seemed quite self-assured while speaking about his future in F1.

Mick Schumacher says he is in F1 for the love of racing, not because of his father’s legacy

As the son of seven-time World Champion Michael Schumacher, Mick has humongous expectations from his fans to live up to. But as of now, the Ferrari Driver Academy recruit wants to continue his learning curve in F1 as he believes he is in this for the love of racing, not because he ever felt like he was compelled to take up F1 as a career because of his father.
Speaking on this topic, Mick Schumacher gave his own insight about coping with his father’s legacy. He said, “I love racing, I love ultimately also winning. For me there was never a doubt that I wanted to race in Formula 1, no matter who my dad was, but he’s so much more to me as well.”
He also went on to say, “And I think that’s one of the things where I don’t need to put pressure on myself and that has been quite clear from day one that if I don’t want to do this I don’t have to – and I still want to do it and still want to make a name for myself as well and race well in Formula 1.”
