“I went through some interesting emotions,” Toto Wolff doesn’t regret being absent during the team’s first win of the season in Brazil
Toto Wolff
Toto Wolff has been leading Mercedes for multiple years now and is a key part of their success. Under his command, the Brackley based team has won the constructors championship 8 times in a row from the start of the hybrid era in 2014 to 2021 which was the last year before a massive change in regulations was introduced. It’s safe to say that the team had dominated every season in retrospect.
However, after missing out on the driver’s championship in 2021, Toto Wolff and Mercedes were adamant on making a car that was faster than any other team on the grid. With the 2022 regulations being vastly different from the year before, all the teams had a chance to jump up on the constructors table as it would all depend on who could interpret the rules better. Unfortunately Mercedes weren’t able to do that as well as Ferrari and Red Bull.
What came next was a season of intense battles trying to compete with the likes of the top two teams. Toto Wolff and Mercedes however went on to improve their performance over the season to a point where they finally had to pace to compete with the front runners. In Brazil, Wolff wasn’t able to attend the race and missed out on his team scoring a 1-2 finish. Here is what he had to say about that.
Toto Wolff is happy for the team and it’s progress
Here is what the Austrian had to say to GPBlog.com in the press conference when asked about it. “I went through some interesting emotions because I had to go to the Middle East because of a meeting, and the team was great. I had this full intercom being built up, like being on the pit wall,” he said.
“I had all the channels that I could speak to even the drivers by pushing the button and in a way I tried to step back a little bit and then when the race was finished, Susie said to me, I bet you regret not being there. It was actually quite the opposite. I felt so proud of the team. I was so proud that it was about the team and the people that represented, and not always about me,” he concluded.
Toto Wolff missed out on George Russell’s maiden F1 win and also the team’s first win this season. To make it even sweeter, a 1-2 finish was enough to give the team boss even more FOMO (Fear of Missing Out). However, Toto is proud of what the team has progressed so far this season. With full focus on Abu Dhabi right not, the team seems to have the pace to double their victory count this season.
