George Russell and Lewis Hamilton are the Mercedes line-up for 2023. Mick Schumacher who was the Haas driver in 2022 left the team after a tough season. Lucky for him, Toto Wolff, the Mercedes boss and team principal gave him the role of a reserve driver for 2023. Once the announcement was made, Hamilton and Russell took to social media and welcomed their new teammate.

It is no secret that 2022 was not favourable for Mercedes. Once a dominant force they now ended up third behind Red Bull and Ferrari. It was Russell’s first season with the team and he made use of the opportunities presented to him. Russell was with Williams for three years. He then moved to Mercedes in 2022 and fought alongside the seven-time world champion Sir Lewis Hamilton.

As Russell has become an expert on what it feels like to move to a team like Mercedes he has some advice for Mick Schumacher. In an interview with Auto Motor und Sport “I am sure there are things we can learn from Mick. For him, seeing how this team operates, seeing how Lewis and I work together and with the engineers will probably be useful for him. If I was in Mick’s shoes, I would be working super hard in the simulator here in Brackley, trying to integrate yourself well with the team.”

Russell stated that winning another championship requires a strong team. “We need top-quality drivers as often as possible, Mick is one of them. He needs to be locking himself in that room and doing the laps.” Toto Wolff had mentioned that Schumacher will have an important role in his new team, which includes his involvement in the team’s decisions.

In the 2022 season, Schumacher went toe-to-toe with Hamilton and Russell. He scored his first points in Formula One at the Silverstone Circuit. However, Guenther Steiner was not convinced enough to give him a seat for 2023. Mercedes then announced him as the reserve driver for the team. The team is hell-bent on catching up with the front runners, Red bull and Ferrari this new season, they hope to win the 2023 world championship.

Mercedes had a good run all these years, with Lewis Hamilton winning 7 world titles and missing out on his eighth in a close battle with Verstappen, they want to make a strong comeback naturally. Russell has proved himself worthy of the Mercedes seat. And now with Mick Schumacher as an addition, the team will throw everything they have got this upcoming season. The team will launch their car, the W14 on 15th February.
