“I’m not sure why the gap’s got bigger,” Hamilton aware of the difference between Mercedes and Red Bull

Since the past week, it was hyped that Mercedes would be the ones finishing in the front row during qualifying and might as well win the race, but it all came down to nothing as expected happened, and the team, although now with much less bouncing on straights, still struggled for a competitive pace. These speculations came after both Hamilton and Russell showcased an amazing sense of speed during the Austrian Grand Prix, which gave the 3rd place podium to Lewis and a P4 finish to the young Brit.

After the qualifying in France, Hamilton was satisfied with the pace of the car, but he knows his and the team’s position against Red Bull and other top teams. The Silver Arrows have brought further upgrades in France, but the changes in the car are relatively small and mostly unaffected for the pace.

“When we say we have updates, [it’s] like the tiniest thing, so it could be half a tenth. Maybe a tenth if it worked perfect,” Hamilton explained (PlanetF1).

REd Bull and Mercedes shared a brilliant battle throughout the 2021 season, but as the new season has been going, there rarely has been any battle between the two teams, and as Hamilton said, he is aware of the same, and how much the car needs to develop.

“I honestly came here thinking ‘okay, at the last race we were three or four tenths off’ and I was thinking this weekend maybe we’ll be three, two tenths off, [but] we’ve been a second [behind] all weekend. Sometimes a second and a half,” he said.

Although he is happy with his qualifying position this weekend (P4), there is still a lot that the car has to develop to battle with the top teams. His teammate, George Russell, starts P6.
