After one of the most chaotic F1 races at the Australian Grand Prix, the happy McLaren boss, Zak Brown, challenged Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff to a boxing match in Las Vegas. Brown was in a good mood as his drivers, Lando Norris, and Oscar Piastri, scored their first points of the 2023 season. It was Piastri’s first point in his Formula 1 career. It was a special moment as it was also his home GP.
Formula 1 has blown up in the US in recent years. The Netflix show, Drive to Survive contributed to its growth in the country. The Las Vegas GP has been introduced for the 2023 season. This is the third race in the States. It is the first time F1 will hold three races in the US since 1982. The races will be held at the Miami International Autodrome in Miami, Florida, Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, and Caesars Palace Grand Prix Circuit in Las Vegas, Nevada. Zak Brown is looking forward to the Vegas race.
Zak Brown spoke to Sky Sports at the Australian Grand Prix, “We were talking about racing Christian [Horner] in Silverstone, because I used to race against Christian. And I’ve talked to Toto about it, let’s see if he’s up for it. When you go to Vegas, what’s Vegas known for? A Little boxing match? I’m ready.” This statement by the McLaren boss made the Sky crew giggle. They also suggested nicknames for the duo, Brown as “Slugger” and Wolff nicknamed “Terminator.”
Zak Brown is relieved his drivers scored solid points in Australia
Zak Brown is over the moon as McLaren got their best 2023 finish in Melbourne. After starting the season on the back foot, this result brought a smile to the chief’s face. Lando Norris finished sixth and took home 8 points. His teammate, Formula 1 rookie Oscar Piastri, finished eighth with 4 points. Ahead of the Australian Grand Prix, McLaren was last in the championship standings. Now they have moved to fifth place ahead of the Alpine Renault team.
After the race, Brown stated, “It was great for Oscar to get points in his home race. The team did well and stayed out of trouble sometimes you get luck your way and sometimes you don’t. It’s early days but everything we’re seeing is he’s pretty much going to be a match for Lando, at least that’s our hope.” Zak Brown signed Piastri after his messy Alpine exit.
The McLaren boss hopes to keep the momentum going. Zak Brown is one of the team principals looking forward to the Vegas GP. He was elated with his team’s performance in Australia and playfully called out Toto Wolff to a boxing challenge. Brown also wants to race against the Red Bull boss, Christian Horner. The duo shared the gird in Formula 3 during the mid-1990s. The McLaren team boss has already made plans for the much-hyped Las Vegas GP.
