“Is that Glock?” F1 Twitter gives their take on the greatest Formula 1 moment of all time
Lewis Hamilton celebrating his first Formula 1 title win in Brazil, 2008
In its long history, Formula 1 has had no shortage of iconic moments. The most recent (notable) moment of these is the finale of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix last year. While the outcome is hotly debated, whatever someone’s personal feelings are of it, they cannot deny that it will stay in the memory for a long, long time. For different reasons for different people.
Back in 2018, in Abu Dhabi once again, in what was then considered to be Fernando Alonso’s final race, he, Sebastian Vettel, and Lewis Hamilton did ‘donuts’ following the race. In 2013, after sealing his fourth title at the (final) Indian Grand Prix, Sebastian Vettel bowed to the car, as if he was worshipping it. It’s surely one of the most iconic images of all time in Formula 1. There’s the title finale in 2008.
There’s also Michael Schumacher slowing down so he and Rubens Barrichello can cross the line at relatively the same time at the 2002 United States Grand Prix after team orders were applied, but unfortunately, Barrichello came up short by just around 0.182 seconds. There’s Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost’s infamous Suzuka crash in 1989, which handed Prost the title. But what is the greatest moment?
The question was posed by Sky Sports on their Formula 1 Twitter account, and the answers came. Below, we present the most notable ones. While there are quite a few contenders, a few, in particular, seemed to dominate.
The greatest Formula 1 moments of all time, according to the fans
Formula 1 fans seem to have quite a hard time getting past the Abu Dhabi finale, and it seems to dominate the field here, even if those replies have received a fair bit of heat. Discussions about its validity rage on even below these, and some of it is surely used to incite just that. But there is no denying that is a season finale that will stay in people’s minds.
The ending of the season finale in 2008, at the Brazilian Grand Prix, is also one of the sport’s finest moments. When Felipe Massa crossed the line, he had done everything he could do to become champion. But Lewis Hamilton made a last-lap overtake on a struggling Timo Glock to climb to fifth, which was enough for him to seal the title. By 1 point.
The finale of the 2012 championship, with Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel duking it out, is also incredibly iconic. At the start, Vettel dropped back to seventh, but then at turn 4, he further dropped to 22nd after a collision with Bruno Senna. Not ideal. But the German made a comeback to finish 6th, while Alonso finished 2nd. That was enough for Vettel to win the title, by 3 points. Niki Lauda had never seen a race like it.
Ayrton Senna embracing Juan Manuel Fangio during the podium celebration of the 1993 Brazilian Grand Prix is also very popular, especially amongst Brazilian fans. On that day, apart from Senna, Michael Schumacher and Damon Hill were the ones who completed the podium. Schumacher would go on to win 7 championships. Fangio won 5 championship, and Senna 3, with Damon Hill one. Quite the podium.

What are your thoughts on the greatest Formula 1 moment of all time? The list of candidates is certainly long, and sometimes, it’s hard to pick one singular greatest moment.
