Toto Wolff has only seen the highest of highs but this is the first time the Mercedes Team Principal is something as catastrophic as this. Mercedes has been off to an awful start to the start. They find themselves in a decent position in the constructor’s championship but that is down to a lot of good fortune. Both Lewis Hamilton and George Russell have had their share of luck early on in the season.

But that doesn’t hide their visibly evident problems. The duo of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell were very lucky to finish P3 and P4 respectively after the Red Bulls of Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez retired in the dying stages of the race. Saudi Arabian GP was an absolute disaster for Mercedes as Lewis Hamilton couldn’t make it to Q2. We saw glimpses of their struggles up till that point but Jeddah confirmed it.

Australian GP brought some respite and calmness for Mercedes when George Russell secured his first podium with Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton finished right behind him. In spite of a decent result, they looked no match to Charles Leclerc or Max Verstappen’s pace. But, we all expected to pick up pace from that point on. But that hasn’t been the case after what what transpired at the Imola GP Qualifying.

The signs are worrying for Mercedes and Toto Wolff. Mercedes’ Team Principal acknowledged the team’s struggles in a recent interview. He said, “I like getting it wrong because that means you learn so much more.”

“Obviously, it is painful whilst you are in the moment. Certainly, when I see our car pounding around five seconds off the pace you want to strangle yourself.

“As a matter of fact, I enjoy the challenge and I enjoy being bad because over the long run in these regulations we will be good.”

“Considering our situation, where we are with the car, that [the lack of practice] makes it worse,” as reported by gpfans.

It has been a season to forget up till point for Mercedes and Toto Wolff, and this could get worse if they can’t find solutions to their porpoising problems. Let’s see how the car performs on race day.
