In the sport of Formula 1, no matter how advanced the technology and no matter how foolproof the processes, there is always a risk factor for the racers who race at about 230 miles per hour. Even then, the FIA has toiled tirelessly to devise the best methods to ensure that driver safety is the topmost priority when it comes to F1. But every now and then, we find some isolated incidents which remind us how dangerous and risky Formula 1 racing can actually be.

In 2020, during the Bahrain Grand Prix in November, Haas racer Romain Grosjean succumbed to one of the biggest accidents in recent Formula 1 history. The entire incident happened right in the opening lap of the race, when the Frenchman crashed into the track-side barriers while trying to gain on his rivals to get a better track position. His car burst into flames and split into two.

And in an incident which was horrifyingly similar to Grosjean’s accident, Haas racer Mick Schumacher encountered a crash in last week’s Monaco Grand Prix that gave every other racer a deja vu feeling because of what had happened two years ago. While Mick Schumacher, whose rookie season was in 2021, was not present at the time of Grosjean’s crash, every F1 racer last Sunday was concerned for Schumacher after seeing the accident.

As a fellow F1 racer, while you have to be competitive with your Championship rivals, there is a deep camaraderie between all the drivers that makes Formula 1 such a great sport to watch. When Mick Schumacher had that accident on Sunday, every racer was worried for his health, and they prayed for him to be alright. In the days that followed, Pierre Gasly, Sebastian Vettel, and Fernando Alonso were interviewed, and all of them gave an account of their thoughts on the accident.

Alpha Tauri’s Pierre Gasly said, “When I saw the gearbox completely out, it was quite shocking.” The French racer also said he believes it was the right decision to call upon the red flag for the situation.

Sebastian Vettel, who has been a close friend to Mick’s father Michael Schumacher, has always looked after Mick Schumacher as if he were his own son. The German racer said, “It’s so easy to get it wrong so quickly. I don’t know exactly what happened to him, I haven’t seen it. The main thing is he is okay.”

In the end, Fernando Alonso of Alpine Racing also commented on the incident, saying that it was a “massive” crash.
