“It was the plan for the whole weekend,” Carlos Sainz gives an insight on his tactical tow to Charles Leclerc

Carlos Sainz might not have able to start from pole due to his engine penalties but he ensured that his fellow team mate secured pole after his tussle with Max Verstappen. Carlos Sainz, at first, was expected to take a 10 place grid penalty but eventually Ferrari decided to provide him with a new internal combustion engine, turbocharger, MGU-H and MGU-K, which meant he will have to start from the back.
But, if you thought he had no role to play during Saturday’s qualifying, you have got it wrong. Firstly, we need to address the fact that Carlos Sainz looked the better off the two Ferraris this weekend. Therefore, Charles needed a push with Max Verstappen looking particularly impressive on this circuit full of high speed corners and long straights.
Long straights meant that Red Bull had the edge over Ferrari in the middle sector. But, that’s when Carlos Sainz proved to be the helping hand. The two Ferraris worked in tandem as Carlos was conveniently use to give Charles Leclerc the slipstream to help him negotiate the pace advantage of the Red Bulls on the straights.
Carlos Sainz talks about the tow to Charles Leclerc was planned before the weekend
The Spaniard was asked after the race that if the tow was practiced before the weekend. To which, he said, “Yeah, the target was to get to Q3 to give Charles the tow two times as we did. So, it was the plan for the whole weekend.”
“I know how to give a good two because I know what I need in my qualy lap if I wanted to gain two, three tenths from a tow.”
“I think we’ve received quite a lot of criticism on the strategy front and I think it’s a bit unfair because every team this season, there’s going to be mistakes with tyres, choosing tyres and everything.”
“But I think this year the team has been very solid on the strategy side and I think today proves it.“
Ferrari needs both Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz to work together if they want to have any chance of winning either of the championships and this can be the start to that.
