“It was too harsh,” Martin Brundle disagrees with the penalty handed to George Russell at the Austrian GP
Martin Brundle
Martin Brundle gave out his views on the penalty shower Austrian GP received. In a course of 71 laps, there were 43 lap times deleted just because of the track limits, with a number of drivers getting warned and some even got a time penalty to cross the white line too many times. But among those were two drivers given a time penalty for pushing the rival out on the gravel after a collision.
George Russell was one of those drivers to receive a penalty for a push he did to Sergio Perez’s Red bull on turn 4, ultimately taking the Red Bull out of the race. This isn’t the first Mercedes- Red Bull incident on turn 4, this time Russell with his full tank and cold tyres had the inside line on the turn with Perez on the outside and the collision pushed Perez making sure his side pods got damaged. However, Martin Brundle called out the penalty to be a bit harsh with all the conditions in mind.
“I thought Russell’s penalty for contact with Sergio Perez on the opening lap in turn 4 was on the harsh side,” Brundle said.
“I thought George did his best to climb the inside kerb and give space, and there was further space to the outside for Sergio,” Brundle continued.

Martin Brundle reflects on Pierre Gasly’s turn 4 incident
Pierre Gasly had his own share of incidents to cover turn 4 when he smashed the rear right tyre of Sebastian Vettel’s Aston Martin and later received a penalty for it too. Martin covered this penalty to be the right one as Sebastian left a good amount of space for the Alpha to pass ahead.
“I thought the penalty was fair enough,” said Brundle.
The Briton drove a 1992 Benetton and covered turn 4 saying it to be one of the bottlenecks on the track. Ferrari won its second consecutive race and looked dominant over the Red Bull Ring with its tyre management. Track limits also played too much role in deciding the result after the race.
