Italian GP 2022: FIA hands Yuki Tsunoda a 10 place grid penalty after the controversial incident at the Dutch GP
Yuki Tsunoda
Max Verstappen might have won the Dutch GP but Yuki Tsunoda stole the limelight, for all the wrong reasons, at the end of the race. We are aware of the fact that AlphaTauri is the sister team of Red Bull and therefore, any help received from the actions of the former leading to a positive result for the latter will definitely be a talking point. That is exactly what has happened in this case too.
Yuki complained about a wheel improperly fitted and pulled over to the side. But, the team confirmed that there is no such issue which allowed him to come back to the pits. After checking the issue, he was sent back but he was called back again as the team identified a different issue. The driver got out of the pit but was eventually told to stop the car on the track.
This brought out the Safety car and proved to be a huge help for Max Verstappen. This allowed the Dutchman to get a cheap pitstop and win the race. After proper scrutiny, FIA decided to reprimand the driver which meant he was in for a penalty at the Italian GP. This was the 5th time that he was reprimanded during the course of the season.
Yuki Tsunoda unhappy after receiving a 10 place grid penalty
The young Japanese driver is not happy with how the situation has been dealt with. Talking about the penalty, he said, “It’s a shame that I got reprimanded. The situation, I couldn’t control it much.”
“And also, most of the reprimands I got was the first half of the season, which most of time were free practice traffic things and the rule was not even settled. Especially the new race directors, they were finding the kind of line for the penalty.”
“It’s not ideal for of course, but anyway, it is what it is. And at least I can reset those reprimands for the for the second half.”
Yuki Tsunoda was impressive during the Dutch GP and looked set to be competing for points. He would have wanted to take that form into this but this penalty definitely complicates stuff.
