Sergio Perez was signed from Racing Point by Christian Horner to play second fiddle to Max Verstappen, after Pierre Gasly and Alex Albon’s stint at Red Bull proved to be unsuccessful. Verstappen had been setting blistering pace in that Red Bull but lacked a reliable partner for Red Bull to fight for that elusive constructor’s championship.

Sergio Perez has caught the eye of everyone, including Christian Horner, with his impressive drives and ability to extract the most out of midfield car at Racing Point. After Lawrence Stroll decided to provide financial assistance to the then Force India, it was pretty clear that one of the drivers had to be sacrificed to make way for his son, Lance Stroll. Unfortunately, Sergio Perez had to take the fall and when he thought his run in F1 was about to end, Christian Horner stepped in to save the day.

This calls for some serious decision making in the Red Bull camp. Allan McNish feels this will definitely give Christian Horner a headache. He said, “Sergio drove a fantastic race. It brings him [to within] 15 points of the lead of the World Championship.”

“It certainly does give Christian Horner a bit of a positive headache. I would say it’s a luxurious problem to have – there are a lot of teams who would like to be in that position.”

“Probably the thing for me over the weekend… he was quicker than Max Verstappen – consistently quicker than Max. And being quicker than Max, at any time, is pretty tough,” as reported by planetf1.

Sergio Perez has made it clear with an impeccable performance in Monaco that he is not here to be the ‘low man on the totem pole’. We all know that all teams have their no.1 and no. 2 driver and Max Verstappen has been that for Red Bull. Hence, Christian Horner has a problem which he might not mind having.
