Former Grand Prix motorbike champion Mick Doohan was overjoyed as his son Jack Doohan made his debut in a F1 car a few hours back in the Free Practice session on the Friday of the Mexican GP weekend. This was a slightly emotional moment for Jack and his father. After all, not many people get to say that they drove a Formula 1 car. Even after his stint was over, the Aussie driver’s dad was left cherishing what was a magnificent moment.

Mick Doohan is a former Grand Prix motorcycle road racing World Champion with 5 consecutive title wins to his name in the 500cc category. After having a glorious career in that category which is know as the MotoGP class today, It is nice to see that Jack Doohan has also followed his father’s steps and entered into the world of racing be it in a different category altogether.

Being just 19 years old, it’s a massive feat for Jack to make his debut in an F1 car. Mick Doohan was invited to the Alpine Garage to watch his son drive a F1 car around the track in Mexico. As enjoyable as it was for the Aussie to watch Jack, the teenager’s debut was cut short as he had to retire the car after 13 laps due to technical issues on the power unit side. Nevertheless it was a massive feat and Mick was more than ready to share his thoughts.

Mick was more than happy to talk about the process that was made by the two to get to where they are today. Here is what he said in an interview with Sky Sports. “It’s an important moment, what all these young drivers aim to do, so as a father, to see him there – I’ve been at every go kart track along the way – it’s a magnificent moment,” he said. When asked if he got butterflies watching his son, he admitted: ”Totally – you’re not in control of what’s going on when you’re just watching, but I cherish the moment. And the plan is that, one day, we’ll be there every weekend.”

When asked about the possibility of Jack being on the grid next year, here is what Mick Doohan had to say ”Really it’s up to Alpine where he goes next year and at the moment, we’re probably just looking at F2 and, if something else becomes available, then good on him,’ said Mick. “But at the moment, his focus is still F2 with, hopefully, some more reserve driving here in Formula One. It’s a great opportunity.
And would he be handing out advice? ‘At the end of the day, I’m just his father … so, ‘stay out of the way, dad’ type of thing!’
he said.

Alpine junior academy member Jack Doohan has a bright future ahead of him. Being just 19 years of age, the driver has already impressed many as he managed to land an FP1 outing in Mexico along with another one in Abu Dhabi. Mick Doohan’s emotions could clearly be seen as he watched his son go around the track and he will again at the last race of the season.
