“It’s a mistake that shouldn’t be happening” : Anthony Davidson blames Daniel Ricciardo for his clash with Carlos Sainz

McLaren driver Daniel Ricciardo has had a disastrous run at the Main Race in the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix 2022 in Imola after putting up a decent performance in the Sprint Race on Saturday with a P6 finish. In the main race, Ricciardo started off with a promise of some better results for his Woking-based team but ended up at the back of the grid after a crash with Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz right at the beginning of the race.

Former British driver Anthony Davidson called Daniel’s mistake of getting into contact with Carlos’ car and taking him out at the beginning of the race “embarrassing”. Although Daniel Ricciardo was not technically in the wrong as he was not held for a penalty by the F1 stewards, he could have gone for a different strategy of overtaking Sainz in the race.

When the lights went out and the drivers started off the Imola Grand Prix, Daniel Ricciardo hurried to gain some spots in the starting lap itself, but in doing so, he came into contact with Sainz’s Ferrari on the inside kerb at Tamburello. After the crash, both cars went off the race track into the gravel, but then Ricciardo joined the pack after some time in the pits. But unfortunately, Sainz could not rejoin and had to retire from the race altogether.

Anthony Davidson admited that he holds high regards for Daniel Ricciardo as a “polished and experienced” driver and he said he did not expect such an incident from him. The British former F1 driver turned Formula 1 pundit said, “It’s a mistake that shouldn’t be happening at this kind of level and it’s a mistake that Carlos Sainz wasn’t expecting from someone usually as polished and as experienced as Daniel Ricciardo.

He further said to his interviewer at Sky Sports F1, “To end a Ferrari driver’s race on lap 1, I’d be making a quick exit if I was him.”

But Daniel Ricciardo has already apologized for his mistake to Sainz and all the Ferrari mechanics after the incident. The Spaniard said, “The mechanics were all with me and we all thanked him for the gesture.”
