Red Bull has been out on a search for a perfect teammate to pair up with their marquee racer Max Verstappen ever since Daniel Ricciardo left the team for Renault with a two-year contract in 2019. While Pierre Gasly was demoted from Red Bull in the middle of the season, Alex Albon took his place and lasted only a year and a half as Red Bull did not renew their contract with him in 2021. So, Sergio Perez was offered the seat at the Milton-Keynnes-based team and he proved to be competitive and ambitious enough to challenge Verstappen while gaining some valuable Championship points for the team.

While Sergio Perez is currently second in the points table behind Max Verstappen, he has already stated that he is aiming for the World Championship for himself, and he is ready to compete with his teammate for that. The healthy competition between Verstappen and Perez has helped both the racers better themselves and it has proven to be a great pairing for Red Bull.

In Formula 1, driver pairing is a huge make-or-break point that worries all the teams while choosing their recruits for the Championship seasons. While some teammate end up having a fierce battle amongst them that hampers both their performances, there are some pairs like Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez who have a healthy competition between each other and they improve each other’s racing skills.

While discussing how Verstappen and Perez managed to nail the team dynamics between them, the reigning World Champion said, “It’s all about respect. If you respect each other you can admit to your teammate that he did better a better job for example.”

He also said, “It’s not always the same with other teams, but it’s very important to find that relationship together to make the car faster. You have to work together, because at the end of the day you both profit from it.”
