China has never produced a Grand Prix rookie among its inhabitants, but Zhou Guanyu has been tasked with switching that after being called up to make his F1 breakthrough for Alfa Romeo in 2022. Zhou’s move to Renault’s youth team for 2019 corresponded with his Formula 2 breakout performance, with numerous victories and pole positions across three seasons resulting to him challenging for the drivers’ title in 2021.

He won the Bahrain Virtual Grand Prix, the replacement series’ first Virtual Grand Prix. He took part in the Renault post-season test in Abu Dhabi along with 2-time Formula One World Champion Fernando Alonso at the end of 2020. During the first practice session of the 2021 Austrian Grand Prix, he made his F1 race weekend debut for Alpine F1 Team, becoming the second driver from mainland China to compete in an F1 Grand Prix after Ma Qinghua. He’s had quite the eventful rookie season in F1 with Alfa Romeo in the first-half of this season.

Here’s how Zhou Guanyu fared in the first-half of the 2022 season of Formula One

The Chinese driver has been paired up with ex-Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas this season. Zhou qualified 15th for his debut in Bahrain, but managed to recover from a poor start to finish 10th and earn a point.

Zhou was involved in an accident at the 2022 British Grand Prix in which his car flipped upside-down. Zhou was taken to a health center after the ambulance crew retrieved him from the car. Zhou mentioned that the halo helped him survive during the crash.

Zhou’s best finish this season was at the Canadian Grand Prix where he finished the Grand Prix at P8. He has managed to accumulate a total of 5 points in the first-half of this season and is currently placed at 17th on the World Drivers’ Standings.
