‘It’s generation zero after 20 years’: James Key divulges reasons behind the downward graph of McLaren

James Key

James Key’s McLaren has had a good share of bad races this season taking them back to where they were at the end of 2017. But the situation seems to have gone a bit high after the first few races but still, it’s a cliffhanger for the British team struggling to fight with the top three teams on the table. This holds back as the technical director goes to the outdated simulator the team still possesses.

James Key talks about the difficulties his team is going through due to the rebuild of their technical centre estimated to get working by 2024 would help them get ahead of time with a great margin. McLaren has the oldest simulator in the grid which is holding them back in a lot of perspectives. This new build will help them to get a lot more informative analysis about the car that would help them in the race with a really great margin or maybe bring them the glory of being the team fighting for the win.

“In terms of the facilities, the difference they will make, it’ll make quite a big difference to us because we’re working in probably the oldest simulator in the pitlane,” said James Key.

“It’s the original, albeit updated, and it’s fantastic considering how well it’s served the team for 20 years or whatever it is, but it’s definitely generation zero,” James openly criticized the old sims.

James Key gives several reasons for the mistakes they are making by using the old simulator and also the wind tunnels. But he is sure of the new generation simulators to have a great impact on the performance as the director mentioned the prototype of it did. But before that, he wants to break all the problems down into pieces.

“Some of the issues last year for example, or the year before that which are very similar, whilst you can replicate them in CFD, CFD has its pros and cons with looking at transient things,” Key explained.

McLaren was a team fighting for the podiums and third position in the championship until last season. But née regulations attacked them to the core with several old technical things ruining their performance starting with breaks and now the simulation and wind tunnels.
