“It’s more of a personal thing,” Sebastian Vettel supports Lewis Hamilton in his fight against jewellery ban by the FIA
Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton
Sebastian Vettel’s protest against the FIA’s clampdown on underwear was Saturday’s highlight after Lewis Hamilton’s protest against the jewellery ban. Both of the bans were talked about in a letter to the teams, by race director Niels Wittich, after an extensive discussion in Australia. The notice has been severely criticized for excessive policing and curbing personal freedom.
Sebastian Vettel, in support of Lewis Hamilton, spoke, “In a way there’s a concern for safety obviously if you have stuff and if the car does catch fire it would be unpleasant but on the other hand, to some degree, it’s personal freedom and we’re old enough to make our choices outside the car, we should be old enough to make choices also inside the car.”
Sebastian protested against the new underwear regulations and in particular discussion around it, whereas Lewis voiced up against the jewellery ban. The Mercedes driver said, “I don’t have any plans on removing them. They are personal things. You should be able to be who you are…They will be staying.”
How did Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton protest?
Both the drivers are known on the grid for voicing their concerns, time and time again. While this time they’re speaking up against these absurd rules and their enforcement, they both have raised voices for social issues as well.
Protesting against the underwear ban, Vettel walked in the safety lane with a grey boxer over his suit. This made a lot of buzzes as the fans shared the videos of the Aston Martin driver.
On the other hand, Lewis Hamilton wore 8 rings and other jewellery pieces to a press conference after the drivers are now prohibited to wear any metal inside the car. The issue has escalated so much so that it is reported that Mercedes’ team principal Toto Wolff met with the FIA president.
