“It’s nice to know how he feels about me,” Lewis Hamilton refuses to apologise to Fernando Alonso after listening to his onboard audio from the Belgian GP
Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso
The Belgian Grand Prix was filled with drama which took place right from the start. With multiple drivers taking grid penalties, Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso were bumped up to the second row. The Spaniard started the race in P3 whilst the Brit started the race alongside him in P4. With the history that these two drivers have, it was inevitable that things would go wrong easily. Since Spa has rocked up a reputation for its extravagant first lap incidents, the same happened in this year’s Belgium Grand Prix which involved the former McLaren teammates.
Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso used to he teammates in McLaren almost a decade ago. Says a lot about how long both of them have been in the sport. During the 2007 season, things didn’t particularly work out well between the pair which has brought about an ever lasting hatred between the two. 15 years later, the bitterness is still there and it is clear that Lewis and Fernando aren’t on good terms. They rarely meet on track and it’s obvious that there’s still tension between them. The former teammates collided during the first lap of the Belgian Grand Prix. What followed was an angry radio message by Alonso which baffled everyone. The amount of anger portrayed by Fernando in the heat of the moment made it obvious that he had those particular words in his chamber for a long time and was waiting to let them out.
During the first lap of the Belgian Grand Prix, Sergio Perez had a bad start and fell behind a few places. Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton on the other hand got really good starts and charged through. Shortly after, Lewis tried to go round the outside of Fernando. The Spaniard was on the apex and did not understeer at all. Nevertheless, Lewis drove into him and was flung into the air and the pair collided. Lewis further went on to not finish the race although he had already ruined Fernando’s. Alonso was really pissed and his radio message was a testament to his emotions. Lewis further apologised for this and admitted that the incident was his fault. The 7 time world champion was ready to personally apologise to Fernando but he made it clear that the Spaniard won’t have to count on a personal apology from him after he listened to Fernando’s radio message.
“I would have until I heard what he said,” Lewis Hamilton on refusing to apologise to Fernando Alonso
After hearing Fernando Alonso’s choice of words, Lewis Hamilton was quick to express his displeasure regarding the whole situation. “No. I would have until I heard what he said. I know that’s how things feel in the heat of the moment, but it’s nice to know how he feels about me,” he said.
He further went on to state that he is glad that he didn’t suffer any injuries. “I remember looking at the ground, it was definitely high up. I’m grateful to be still alive and in shape,” he continued.
It’s a no brainer that the tension that’s there between Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso might never end. The pair have known each other for years but the situation has never been in their favour. Lewis’s move on Fernando was a bit far fetched and really makes you think if the 7 time world champion has forgotten how to race wheel to wheel after constantly being at the front.
