‘It’s wholly inaccurate and unfair,’ Martin Brundle calls out Fernando Alonso’s criticism of Lewis Hamilton
Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton
The relationship between Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton has always been pale but the tension between them seemed to have died down in the past few years but it looks like it has been and always will be there. Lewis and Fernando have been teammates in the past when they were racing for McLaren. 15 years later, the bitterness is still there and it is clear that Lewis and Fernando aren’t on good terms. They rarely meet on track and it’s obvious that there’s still a lot tension between them.
Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso came together in the first lap of the ever dramatic Belgian Grand Prix which later resulted in Lewis slowing down and retiring from the race as there was smoke coming from the back of his W13. This collision had also effectively ruined Fernando’s race too. Lewis went round the outside of the Spaniard and proceeded to turn into him causing both of them to collide. The 7 time world champion was launched into the air after their contact. After the race, the Mercedes driver took a look at the footage and immediately went on to admit that it was his fault. Although the onboard radio that he heard from Alonso was deeply unsettling for Lewis.
Former F1 driver turned commentator, Martin Brundle believes that Fernando Alonso went a bit too far in his radio message to Lewis Hamilton after the crash. While Brundle admitted that the incident was Lewis’s fault although the reaction that Alonso had was not very respectful. He further went on to give his thoughts on the situation.
“Lewis is one of the fairest and cleanest drivers,” F1 commentator Martin Brundle on the dispute between Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso
Martin Brundle believes that Lewis Hamilton is to blame for the incident and it is commendable that he took responsibility for it. “Lewis said he couldn’t see Fernando in his blind spot but frankly he was bound to be there somewhere, and the Spaniard tried his best to stay to the inside and give space,” he said.
“Lewis is one of the fairest and cleanest drivers in the history of F1, he hasn’t needed to resort to too many professional fouls given his relentless speed,” he continued .
Martin Brundle supporting his fellow British drivers even when they are in the wrong is no surprise to anyone. In the heat of the moment, words spring out without thinking first. So it is unfair to the Spaniard to be criticised for his actions when Lewis was the one who caused the incident in the first place.
