Mercedes has been led by Austrian billionaire Toto Wolff for over a decade now, going from a midfield team to winning eight consecutive Constructors’ Championships, earning them over a hundred wins in the process.
1997 World Champion Jacques Villeneuve commended Toto Wolff’s progress with the team, appreciating his commitment. Villeneuve claimed that Wolff could lead Mercedes to go back to its winning ways, given Mercedes worked well with George Russell and Lewis Hamilton.
He has the character, the personality and the strength. So there’s no reason why not. Then it depends on who else is in the team, it depends also on how Lewis and George work with the engineers in pushing the team forward and focus, same as Max, or not.Villeneuve said, as reported by racingnews365
Mercedes has not won a championship in two years, after 2021 when they won their eighth consecutive Constructors’ Championship. The Brackley-based team has won the teams’ title eight out of their 14 years in the sport and will be looking to improve that number in 2024 aided by the revamped W15.
Mercedes technical director admits lacklustre 2023 performance
Mercedes failed to achieve a race win in 2023, making slight errors in the development of the W14. Changing concepts at the Monaco Grand Prix by introducing sidepods, the team still failed to make much of the year despite taking second in the Constructors Standings.
Mercedes technical director James Allison said Red Bull was the only team on the grid that managed to do a good job in 2023. Allison further said that Mercedes and Ferrari “dropped the ball” when it came to car development, falling far behind Red Bull in an extremely dominant year for them.
I see the grid as Max particularly but Red bull more generally did standout the best job. The rest of us have really underperformed. That's just us (Mercedes) dropping the ball, Ferrari dropping the ball.
The W15 is being redeveloped entirely by Mercedes, aided by the additional money coming from obtaining P2 in the Championship. Mercedes has finished within the top three teams of the championship for over a decade now, establishing themselves as consistent frontrunners, and so will be trying to make a successful title bid in the upcoming seasons.
