Williams F1 team came under new leadership as of 2023 in the name of Ex-Mercedes head of strategy, James Vowles. The Brit went on to replace former Volkswagen motorsports boss Jost Capito and assumed control of the Grove based squad back in February at the start of the year. After being bought by private investment firm Dorilton Capital, multiple changes have been made within the squad.
For the 2023 F1 season, Williams’s driver squad comprised of Alex Albon and rookie driver Logan Sargeant. While Alex is on a long term deal, there is uncertainty over Logan’s future at Williams and in F1 as of now. Despite not having scored a single point, James Vowles has backed the American racer. The Williams team boss intends to initiate a five year recovery plan for the team in order to bring it back to its winning ways like in the past.
James Vowles believes it is better to be honest with drivers who are interested in being a part of the team’s future. In an interview, here is what he had to say. “Anything you do that lends them to realise that the numbers are fictitious will give you a short-term gain for a long-term massive deficit, including a loss of a driver,” he said. “What I’ve done with both Pat and Alex as well, is show them why we will be moving forward on the long-term vision,” explained Vowles.
James Vowles took 3 months to convince Pat Fry to join the team
In recent times, Williams Racing’s newest hire is Alpine’s Chief Technical officer Pat Fry. Vowles stated that he had singled out the Brit back in January. However, it took Vowles three months to convince him to join the team. It looks quite likely that Vowles sees Pat and Alex in his 5 year plan to bring Williams back to its glory days. Logan also seems to have improved a lot throughout his time in F1 so far.
As of the 2023 Belgian GP, Williams are currently holding seventh place in the drivers standings which is a huge improvement. Drivers Alex Albon and Logan Sargeant have done a mega job so far. However, Alex is the one who has managed to score 100% of the team’s points. It will be interesting to see what the team can do together in the remaining half of the F1 season.
