“Daniel Ricciardo and Lewis Hamilton are more focused on making the car more comfortable,” Juan Pablo Montoya makes an interesting comparison

The current season of Formula 1 views a massive rule change which has introduced many new factors to the sport. Some of them are the new ground effect cars, the 18 inch tyres and the cost cap each team is under. This has resulted in a huge difference between the previous era cars of Formula 1 and the current one. A few drivers on the grid have driven the previous era machinery for almost all their career, and seem to be struggling to adapt to the modern Formula 1 machine.

The major contrast seen on the grid lies between the performance of the Mercedes and McLaren drivers. The points scored by the drivers of the respective teams is a clear indicator of this. McLaren driver, Lando Norris having scored 35 points in the championship stands in P6 while his counterpart, Daniel Ricciardo has only scored 11 points which place him in P11. At the Mercedes team, George Russell has scored 49 points which put him as high as P4. However, his team mate, Lewis Hamilton has only managed to grab 28 points and is situated in P7.

Daniel Ricciardo and Lewis Hamilton

McLaren has had a rocky start to its 2022 campaign, but seems to have regained confidence in its package after the Imola Grand Prix. Lando Norris grabbed a podium for the team with a P3 finish, while Ricciardo crossed the chequered flag in P18. Juan Pablo Montaya expressed his views on the McLaren drivers saying “Daniel wants the car to do what he wants, whereas Lando is younger and thinks ‘we’ll see what happens’. He just goes for it and sees along the way how he can handle the car.”

A similar story exists at the Mercedes in the 2022 season so far. The seven time world champion, Lewis Hamilton has had a rough start to his campaign, while his British team mate seems to unlocking the full potential of his W13. Montaya opined about ths situation by saying ”That doesn’t mean George is much faster than Lewis. The younger drivers are more comfortable taking risks and more comfortable with how the car moves. Daniel and Lewis are more focused on making the car more comfortable.”

The 2022 season has a potential for a shuffled grid each race weekend. This comes as a consequence of each team trying to learn more about their car at each race and stuck in a battle for car development till the end of the season. The action is set to unfold at Miami in just a few hours, with Mclaren and Mercedes ready to make a step up in their 2022 season.
