Lance Stroll performed dismally badly compared to the stellar campaign of his teammate Fernando Alonso. Stroll had only 74 points in the 2023 season while Alonso recorded 204 points in his first season with Aston Martin.
Lance Stroll’s lack of sufficient points in 2023 caused Aston Martin to drop to fifth place despite Alonso finishing 4th in the Drivers’ Championship. Stroll’s inability to match Alonso came under scrutiny in 2023, as he could not accrue a single podium while Alonso managed eight. When asked about this disparity, Stroll retorted that he would perform better if the car was more to his liking.
I knew that if I feel the platform working well underneath me, and I can drive the car freely without kind of dealing and driving around things that inherently bothered me in the car, I’d be at a good level and I’d get the most out of myself.Lance Stroll said, as reported by PlanetF1
Stroll has an unfortunate history of being unable to match more experienced teammates, getting vastly outmatched by Sebastian Vettel and Sergio Perez during their stints as his teammate. The Canadian driver has been outperformed by his teammate every single year of his F1 career except in 2018.
Lance Stroll claims 2023 season was ridden with ‘missed opportunities’
Lance Stroll suffered a disappointing campaign in 2023, unable to score a single podium in a year that significantly marked Aston Martin’s surge to being one of the frontrunners. Stroll could only obtain tenth in the Drivers’ Championship ahead of Pierre Gasly.
With a best finish of fourth place at the Australian Grand Prix, Stroll was unable to score a single podium in contrast to his teammate with eight. Stroll claimed the substandard season was partly affected by missed opportunities throughout the campaign.
Yeah, it's been a season with a lot of bad luck, a lot of missed opportunity. I don't like using the words bad luck, but I think missed opportunities. But I guess it's bad luck when I think about the failures and stuff.Lance Stroll said, as reported by autosport.com
Lance Stroll was affected by numerous technical issues throughout the year, which were worsened by some instances of driver error. The European F3 champion will be hoping for a more successful 2024 season.
