The football world is in mourning today as legendary football maestro Pele has died aged 82. The Brazilian was admitted to the hospital in his home country during the month of November due to a respiratory infection and multiple complications regarding his colon cancer. The motorsport world was already in mourning as it was 9 years since 7 time world champion Michael Schumacher had a life changing skiing accident and this news has just added to everyone’s misery.

In the past week, Pele’s health kept deteriorating wherein the doctors said that he was not responding positively to the chemotherapy sessions. This led to doctors and his family realising that the Brazilian soccer legend didn’t have much time left. His daughter Kely Nascimento was with him all throughout the week in the hospital. However, he was then joined by his son Edinho and a lot of his family members for Christmas.

Pele got to live a full life but unfortunately that wasn’t the case for Michael Schumacher. After retiring from the sport for the second time, the German was off to the mountains after a tough season with Mercedes. It has been 9 years since Schumi sustained a serious head injury whilst skiing in Meribel, France. On 29th December 2013, the German fell and hit his head on a rock.

Having achieved so much in their sporting worlds, it is safe to say that Michael Schumacher and Pele were the greatest athletes of their generation. Having suffered adversity all throughout, they never backed down. The Brazilian veteran will always be known for being the only footballer to have won the world cup thrice. On the other hand, the German will always be known for bringing Ferrari back to its winning ways whilst breaking records and becoming a 7 time F1 world champion.

Pele and Schumi had an impeccable career. Whilst we know how the Brazilian lived his life, little was to be known about Michael. After his accident, he was immediately transferred to the hospital in Grenoble where he was placed in a medically induced coma and operations were carried out. During 2014, it was announced that Schumacher was finally out of the coma and undergoing treatment.

Later on, he was taken back to his home in Switzerland where is treatment is still going on. That accident completely changed Michael’s life as he was not the same person that everyone knew. “Everybody misses Michael, but Michael is here. [It’s] different, but he’s here, and that gives us strength, I find,” his wife Corinna told the media. Everything about Michael’s life has been kept private ever since he was brought back home.

Back in 2002, the footballer was invited by the Brazilian GP race organisers to wave the checkered flag during the grand prix at Interlagos almost 20 years ago. “I so much wanted to wave the flag for a Brazilian driver,” Pele said. “Shame it was not this time.” All three Brazilian drivers who took part in the race had failed to cross the finish line as they had to retire their car sometime after the halfway distance mark was reached.

Nevertheless, the two athletes have done so much for their sport during their time that it is almost impossible for anyone else to replicate the same. It has been 9 years since Michael’s horrific accident and he is missed by fans all around the world. The response will be the same for the Football legend as the whole world is in mourning the death of an all time great.
