Lewis Hamilton scored some crucial points for Mercedes at the Italian GP. The seven-time champion tried to make his way up the field after starting P8. However, a collision with McLaren’s Oscar Piastri hampered the prospects of the British driver. Now, Hamilton has accepted that it was his mistake that ended up in the two drivers making contact at Monza.

The 38-year-old mentioned that he was enjoying the latter stages of the race. Lewis Hamilton was on a set of medium tires in the second half of the race while his competitors were on the hard compound tire. This allowed the seven-time champion to close the gap to Piastri ahead, along with Lando Norris and Alex Albon. However, Hamilton admitted that he had misjudged the gap to the Australian driver.

The Mercedes driver was disappointed after making a mistake that made him collide with the McLaren. Although, Hamilton went to apologize to Piastri right after the end of the race. The seven-time champion said, “I enjoyed the battle at the end. A bit unfortunate I misjudged it the gap that I had to Piastri right at the end. It was totally my fault and I apologized to him straight afterwards.”

The seven-time champion was given a five-second time penalty for the incident with Oscar Piastri. Nevertheless, Hamilton managed to get past Lando Norris and Alex Albon before the end of the race. Moreover, the 38-year-old gained enough of a gap to negate any effect of the time penalty. As such, Lewis Hamilton finished the Italian GP in sixth place.

A P6 finish is certainly not what Hamilton would aim for. However, Mercedes was no match for Red Bull and Ferrari this weekend. George Russell in the other Mercedes crossed the chequered flag in fifth place. As such, there is still a lot of work left to be done by the Brackley-based team to reclaim its spot at the front of the grid.

Thus, Lewis Hamilton has admitted his fault for the incident with Oscar Piastri at the Italian GP. The 38-year-old claimed that he misjudged the gap to the McLaren while making a move under breaking. This led to both cars taking the escape road to avoid further damage. Hamilton would be looking to forget about this collision and focus on the next round in Singapore.
