Lewis Hamilton, the Mercedes Formula 1 driver, has made it known that he just lacked the pace to challenge for the win at the Canadian GP. He feels that the Gilles-Villeneuve circuit has never been strong for Mercedes and is just grateful that he could land his W14 in the podium places at the end of the race.
The Canadian GP got off to an extremely promising start for Lewis Hamilton, where he got the better of Alonso going into Turn 1; however, as the race settled down, the AMR23 proved a bit faster and more efficient than the W14. Max Verstappen was out of Hamilton’s reach from the beginning of the race.
Lewis Hamilton thinks Mercedes maximized its race in Canada, and while stressing about it during the post-race interviews, he said, “It’s honestly been a great weekend for us. We’re slowly chipping away. The Astons took a little step ahead with their upgrades but we’re hoping to bring a little more moving forwards. But to have this consistency in Montreal, such an incredible city, with such a great crowd every year here without fail, I just want to thank everyone here.”
“It’s an honor to be up there with two world champions. Unfortunately, we didn’t have the pace today. We knew this wouldn’t be our strongest circuit because we struggle in the lower-speed corners. That’s really where I was losing to Fernando and to Max. We’ve got a lot of work to do to add rear downforce and more efficiency. But we’re chipping away and I do believe we’ll get there. We’re moving in the right direction.”
Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes team is closing the gap to Red Bull

Max Verstappen and Co. have been incredibly dominant in the 2023 F1 season. Still, as the number of races is going down, Mercedes is continuously improving, and an example of it was seen during the recently concluded race. The Brackley-based team is slowly but surely catching up to Red Bull.
As things stand, the Austrian outfit has amassed 321 points in the Constructors Championship and is pretty much out of the reach of the chasing pack. However, from a Mercedes point of view, the ongoing campaign is all about improving as much as possible and getting as close as possible to the Christian Horner-led team.
Mercedes is currently second in the Championship with 167 points on the board, and their completion is with Aston Martin and the Maranello-based Ferrari F1 team. On the back of Lewis Hamilton’s performance in Canada, do you think Mercedes would be able to stay in second?
