Lewis Hamilton has called Sebastian Vettel “one of the greatest people” Formula One has ever seen, praising the German for being one of the few individuals to join him in recent times in being outspoken on societal problems. On Thursday, 4-time Formula One World Champion Sebastian Vettel announced his retirement from Formula One at the end of this season.

Apart from intending to spend more time with his family, one of the reasons Vettel stepped down was to allocate more attention to environmentalism, which has evolved into one of the German driver’s interests outside of racing.

Hamilton and Vettel have been F1’s most outspoken drivers on a diverse range of social and controversial subjects, including racial and gender injustice both inside and outside of F1, as well as protesting anti-gay laws. In support of the LGBTQ+ community, they have both regularly donned Pride colours before races or on their race helmets in certain nations.

“When we were younger, we didn’t have time to talk about what we’re doing in our own lives or what’s important to us. And so, over time, we started seeing each other, taking these bold steps and for things to stand up for what we believe in and have been able to support each other,” said Hamilton fondly about their initial years in Formula One.

“He [Sebastian] was very supportive. I think I supported him as well and realized that we have a lot more in common than just the driving passion. It was him [Vettel} who really stepped out into the uncomfortable light and tried to do something with the platform that we have to do. And I think for me that’s why he’s so different from all the other drivers that have been here,” added the 7-time Formula One World Champion.

Since their debuts in 2007, Hamilton and Vettel have influenced modern Formula One, having won 11 championships among them. Hamilton conceded their connection has grown stronger as they’ve gotten older, though he acknowledged they’ve never had the opportunity to meet outside of an F1 environment, which he hopes to change in the coming years.
