Lewis Hamilton finished P2 in the Australian GP. The Briton secured the best result for the team this season. Hamilton qualified third on the grid, while his teammate, George Russell, qualified second. The seven-time world champion put on a brilliant show and stayed calm amidst one of the most chaotic races ever. He went on to take his first podium of the 2023 F1 season.

After the race, there was some confusion. Usually, the team staff waited for the driver to congratulate and celebrate him. But that was not the case this time. Hamilton walked towards his team members. To his surprise, he found very few of them. Having realised most of his team was not there to congratulate him in Parc Ferme, the Mercedes star was disappointed.

A video captured by surfing star Kelly Slater emerged after the race. In the clip, Hamilton was puzzled and asked, “Where is everybody? Where the f*** is my team?”. He was then told they were in the garage. The 38-year-old collected his trophy on the podium and looked for his team but did not spot them. However, Mercedes boss Toto Wolff was present during the podium ceremony watching Hamilton with pride.

Lewis Hamilton spoke to F1TV after the podium celebrations. He was asked what the result meant to him after a tough start to the year. Hamilton replied, “I don’t know what it means to the team, because I haven’t seen anybody if I’m honest. But for me, this is an incredible result for us. We came here thinking – the car was the same – so we were thinking it’s going to struggle for a few races until we can find some sort of upgrade to bring later on down the line, and that could be five races away.”

Melbourne was Mercedes’ best finish of the 2023 season. However, the team will not dwell on it. They will make the necessary changes and bring updates. They are aware that they need to change the car concept and make bold decisions. Lewis Hamilton has battled with uncompetitive cars and delivered good results before. And that is exactly what he did in the Australian GP.

With the cost cap, there is a restriction. Mercedes will have to figure out what to do within the budget. Toto Wolff has stated that the team will pursue a new direction to rectify W14. Lewis Hamilton is not one to sit back in times of adversity, he has revealed that he provided feedback and gave suggestions to improve the car. Over the next few races, Mercedes might bring an efficient package.
