Mercedes had a poor start to the 2023 season as they secured just one podium from the first six races. However, significant upgrades led to a resurgence, allowing them to close the gap on Aston Martin and, to a small extent, Red Bull. With the help of four impressive podiums, Lewis Hamilton led the team back to the top.
But the seven-time champion pointed out that the F1 nation isn’t giving this resurgence the credit it deserves. Hamilton has narrowed the gap to third-placed Fernando Alonso, and Mercedes pulled 51 points ahead of Aston Martins by the summer break.
Hamilton feels that their accomplishments, particularly the improvements and successes that followed the initial struggles haven’t been given enough attention or acknowledgment. He told Sky Sports, “I think it’s a huge achievement, and I think it’s something that I feel has been a little bit overlooked if I’m being honest.”
He added that he is proud of his team’s efforts despite their current position not making them a contender week in and week out for wins. He said, “Ultimately, because we want to win, I wouldn’t say there’s been the most positive narrative, but I’m really proud of the team and the progress and the steps we have taken with the car.”
Lewis Hamilton hopeful over Dutch GP chances
As the countdown for the Dutch Grand Prix begins, Hamilton expresses optimism about Mercedes’ competitiveness at Zandvoort. He drew confidence from his and George Russell‘s strong showings at the circuit last year.
Hamilton believes the W14 could excel in dry conditions due to the track’s similarity to Hungary, where he secured pole position in July. Additionally, he notes that potential showers in the forecast could also work in his favor.
“I think the wet weather definitely spices things up. I think in Spa, which is not a strong circuit for us, when it rained we were performing quite well, so I’m hoping that that’s the case this weekend, if it is wet. But otherwise, I think the guys think that this is not far too different to Budapest, and the car was a lot better for Budapest,” Hamilton said.
