As you may know, Lewis Hamilton will be producing a movie centered around Formula 1, starring Brad Pitt. Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick) will direct and produce the film alongside Hamilton, Plan B Entertainment (which Pitt owns), and Jerry Bruckheimer and Chad Oman of Jerry Bruckheimer Films (the two Top Gun movies and the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise). Ehren Kruger (Top Gun: Maverick) will write the screenplay. The movie has been acquired by Apple Studios.

Hamilton will be producing the movie through his production company, ‘Dawn Apollo Films’. He will also serve as an advisor. Last season, multiple people involved in the project visited the paddock in Austin, during the United States Grand Prix. The movie will be shot on race weekends in the second half of the season in 2023. The seven-time world champion has previously expressed his excitement about the project, and feels it will be the ‘best racing movie ever’.

It will be produced by Hamilton, but all drivers and teams will be involved in some capacity. As for the story, Brad Pitt stars as a veteran that will return from retirement, to mentor a young gun (as teammates). Recently, Hamilton gave an update on the production status of the movie. Currently, the project is in the process of casting. As per Autosport, he said: “We’re going through a process right now of selecting the character that will be alongside Brad, which is exciting.”

He elaborated: “Basically that’s the process of watching [the auditions]. We have recordings of them doing certain scenes and we got through it. I have sat in the office with Jerry [Bruckheimer] and Joe [Kosinski] and Brad [Pitt], and we’ve been watching them and kind of given our inputs and what we think.” though he did not disclose what actors they’ve been looking at.

Lewis Hamilton wants Brad Pitt-starred movie to be like ‘F1 in the future’

Lewis Hamilton, particularly in the last few years, has been pushing for more diversity and representation in Formula 1. Currently, the truth is that it’s a white, European man’s sport. There has only ever been one black driver in the history of F1, which is Hamilton himself, and only 5 female drivers. Of those, only one (Leila Lombardi) scored points. But there have been steps towards increasing female representation in the F1 circuit, such as the start of the W Series and the F1 Academy.

Hamilton’s vision for the movie reflects his push for more diversity. He said: “I want to make the movie, in terms of like having diversity and representation, I want it to be as Formula 1 should be in the future – or should be now, but will be in the future. I want to see female mechanics. We would love to see a female driver. We haven’t gotten to that point just yet. But why not?”

Time will tell if it really can be the greatest motorsport movie ever, as Hamilton thinks it will. The involvement (and support) of basically the whole F1 paddock and the fact that it’ll be shooting on race weekends is certainly a positive in this regard. The seven-time world champion’s input should also help make it (the racing, at least) more realistic.
