Lewis Hamilton deems his racing craft ‘not enough’ to close the HUMONGOUS gap to Red Bull in 2023
Lewis Hamilton does not see a way in which he would be able to become a nuisance for Red Bull this year.

Lewis Hamilton, the former 7-time F1 World Champion, has given a damning verdict on his chances during the 2023 F1 season. The Red Bull F1 team has produced an absolute beast in the form of the RB 19, and Hamilton has made it known that his driving ability alone cannot make up for the huge deficit to Max Verstappen and Co.
Lewis Hamilton came into the ongoing campaign with the hope of having a serious go at the 2023 world championship. However, just after the midway point of the ongoing campaign, the Brit has thrown in the towel and admitted that he couldn’t close the gap to the Milton-Keynes-based team in his W14.
While talking in brief about the same, he told racingnews365, “I’m always trying to rely on my driving ability to make up for the deficit, but it’s not been ultimately enough in a lot of places. If you look at the race in Silverstone, you may not have seen it, but we were equal in time until Turn 13 to Max on a qualifying lap. Then we just lost the performance and speed after that.“
Looking at the comments of the Mercedes legend, it is clear that he does not see how he or his team can close the deficit to Red Bull at the front of the grid. Christian Horner and Co. have dominated the first leg of the campaign, and much of the same is expected from them after the summer break.
Lewis Hamilton feels Mercedes needs to understand the airflow around the W14 fully
While Lewis Hamilton has grudgingly accepted that he can’t close the gap to Red Bull this year, he also believes that Mercedes has to do everything to improve the W14 as much as possible. He ardently feels that understanding the airflow around the Mercedes car could help the team extract additional performance.
While shedding light on the same, he said, “The thing we can’t see is the airflow throughout the car and they’re [engineers] just limited. All the vortices would blow your mind if you saw what’s happening underneath the car, which is a lot different from the previous generations of cars. Working through that just takes time and also you’re very limited resources as well so you have to be careful which decisions you make.”
The ongoing F1 campaign is currently in its summer break and the next F1 weekend is scheduled to start from the 25th of August. Considering the time that Mercedes has currently got on its hands, it is going to be fascinating to see how the team would perform during the 2023 Dutch Grand Prix.
