Formula 1 2022 was Lewis Hamilton‘s first ever winless season in his F1 career of fifteen years. Ever since the Briton stepped into the pinnacle of motorsports with his debut in 2007, he had proven his mettle time and again by bringing home some brilliant results for his team. In fact, in what was only his second year in Formula 1, he managed to make a go for the World Championship and win it against stalwarts like Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen.

Finally, in 2021, Lewis Hamilton got his seventh World title and he entered last season with hopes for his eighth record-breaking Championship win. Unfortunately, the Mercedes package for 2022 was just not good enough when compared to Red Bull’s RB-18 and even Ferrari‘s F1-75. There were reliability issues and more importantly, technical problems such as their troubles with porpoising that plagued the team throughout the season. All this resulted in an overall upsetting performance from Mercedes, and Lewis had his first and only winless season in F1.

In a recent interview, Lewis Hamilton looked back at the season that he has just come out of, and his views were completely different from what any person would expect. According to the seven-time World Champion, it felt “exciting” when they felt a rush after coming fourth or fifth and not winning every race everytime they went out on the racetracks.

When a racer gets back-to-back World Championship wins and finds himself uncontested in a sport like Formula 1 where every driver is chasing adrenaline, it might feel a bit boring. Some fans might think the upsetting results of 2022 have gotten Lewis Hamilton all sad and demotivated, but the 37-year-old claimed that is not true. He said, “It definitely doesn’t demotivate me! I’m sure I’ve had seasons without wins before – that must have been in karting in 2001. Quite a long time ago! Last season, of course, we wanted to fight for the world championship, but we had to acknowledge reality early in the season. Some results still felt like victories, even if they weren’t.”

He also said, “We had so many successes before that it felt a little empty. We won, but we had expected it. We were fighting for fifth place and everyone was excited. Then it was about fourth place, and everyone was totally thrilled. It was a nice experience to be so happy about a fourth or fifth place.”

In the upcoming 2023 season, Lewis Hamilton and his Team Principal at Mercedes, Toto Wolff, have both claimed they will get back to their winning ways by producing some great results. If Lewis succeeds in turning the table on Max Verstappen and seizing the World Championship win, then it will be his eighth title and he will become F1’s most successful driver in history.
